We were really looking forward to Carcassonne and as the photo's show, it really is a 'fairy tale' type of city. Built right on top of a hill by the Cathares around the 12/13th century (s) it was the only Cathare stronghold never to be breached by enemies, looking at the defensive walls you can see why!. However we have seen so many castles, chateaux and forts over the last 8 weeks that the impact was a little diluted (sorry). Also the inner of the old city is packed full of tacky gift shops telling tacky tourist trite that the charm is tainted (these are of course our own personal opinions)
Still, it one of those places that 'needs to be seen' (even if we did do it in less than 2 hours)
